First-time setup
When you first start Windows 11 (or after a reset), you’ll go through setup. The best first steps are: update the system, secure your account, and set basic preferences.
- Microsoft account: syncs settings, OneDrive, Store apps.
- Local account: more offline / less sync (still supported in many scenarios).
- Set a strong password + add a PIN (Windows Hello).
- Review Privacy & security settings (location, diagnostics).
- Set time zone and region correctly.
- Sign in to OneDrive only if you want cloud backup/sync.
Do updates immediately
Go to Settings → Windows Update, install updates, then restart.
Start menu & Taskbar
The Start menu is your app launcher, and the Taskbar is your “always available” control bar.
- Right-click an app → Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar.
- Drag pinned apps to reorder.
- Remove clutter: right-click → Unpin.
- Use Start search to find apps, files, settings quickly.
- Type: “Bluetooth”, “Night light”, “Storage” etc.
Quick Settings vs Settings
Click the network/volume/battery area to open Quick Settings (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness). Use Settings for deeper configuration.
Settings you’ll use most
Open Settings with Win + I. Most core controls live here.
- Display: scaling, resolution, HDR (if available).
- Sound: input/output device, troubleshoot audio.
- Notifications: reduce distractions.
- Storage: see what’s using space.
- Wallpaper, colors, themes.
- Lock screen and fonts.
- Taskbar behavior and Start layout options.
File Explorer (files & folders)
File Explorer helps you manage files. Open it with Win + E.
Key locations
- Downloads: installers, PDFs, random files.
- Documents: work files.
- Pictures/Videos: media.
- Desktop: keep minimal for cleanliness.
- Syncs Desktop/Documents/Pictures (depending on setup).
- Great for backup, but may confuse file locations if you’re new.
Tabs, ZIPs, and quick tools
- Tabs: open folders in one window (like a browser).
- ZIP files: Windows can open/extract ZIP natively (right-click → Extract).
- Show file extensions: Explorer → View → Show → File name extensions.
.pdf, .exe, .docx, etc.
Installing and managing apps
You can install apps from the Microsoft Store or from trusted vendor websites.
- Microsoft Store: easiest + generally safer.
- Vendor website: download from the official site only.
- Keep installers in Downloads; delete old installers later.
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Uninstall.
- Settings → Apps → Default apps (browser, PDF reader, etc.).
Startup apps
Too many apps on startup slows boot. Go to Settings → Apps → Startup and disable what you don’t need.
Productivity features
Windows 11 is excellent for multitasking. These features can change how fast you work.
Snap Layouts (arrange windows)
- Hover over the maximize button to see layouts.
- Or use Win + ← / →.
- Snap Groups help you return to sets of apps quickly.
- Create separate desktops for work/study/personal.
- Shortcut: Win + Ctrl + D (new desktop).
- Switch: Win + Ctrl + ←/→.
Clipboard history
Enable and use clipboard history with Win + V (great for copying multiple items).
Keyboard shortcuts (must-know)
These are the shortcuts that save the most time on Windows 11.

- Check Optional updates if you have driver issues (only when needed).
- After updates, test Wi-Fi/audio/printer.
Backup & recovery
Backups prevent disasters. You have a few levels of safety on Windows 11.

- Keep at least one copy outside your PC.
- System Restore: undo system changes (if enabled).

Performance: speed up Windows 11
If your PC feels slow, these steps usually help the most.
- Disable unnecessary startup apps.
- Free disk space (Storage settings).
- Restart occasionally (not just sleep).
- Update drivers if you have glitches.

Wi-Fi & networking
Most Wi-Fi issues are fixed with a few reliable steps.
Fast Wi-Fi fixes
- Turn Wi-Fi off/on from Quick Settings.
- Forget the network → reconnect (re-enter password).
- Restart router (if possible) and PC.
- Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset (last resort).
Troubleshooting (common problems)
When something breaks: the safe order
- Restart the PC.
- Install Windows Update and restart.
- Check Device Manager for driver issues (yellow warning icons).

Useful repair commands (advanced)
Run Command Prompt/Terminal as Admin (Win+X → Terminal (Admin)):
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
